About the Region

The Santa Cruz Mountains are called “America’s Premier Mountain Appellation” because it was the first winegrowing region in the nation to be defined by a mountain range. The peak of Mount Madonna forms the southern boundary, and the sparkling waters of Half Moon Bay define the northern boundary. The minimum vineyard elevation is 400 feet on the ocean side and rises from 400 feet on the eastern San Francisco Bay side to 800 feet at the southeast boundary. Vineyards are planted as high as 3,200 feet. The appellation exceeds 400,000 acres although vineyard plantings are around 1,500 acres. Learn more at Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers website and see detailed information about the region on the new Everyvine Santa Cruz Mountains page.

Our map embedding allows you to put the Everyvine maps you like on your website. For example, if you are a vineyard owner and like the block map you see on your vineyard’s profile page, you can now get that map on your website. The maps are controlled by a configuration file which we provide when someone signs up for the service. The config file allows you to specify exactly what features from Everyvine you want to appear on the map. Features you can add to a map include vineyard points, blocks, wineries, wine regions, soil types and more.

“…have the map styled to fit the design of your website”

And not only can you pick the map features, you can even have the map styled to fit the design of your website. Elements like tool-tips and legends can be colored to integrate with your graphic design. Plus styled background maps that give your map a truly unique look. See the examples to get some ideas.

The map embedding service has been priced as a monthly fee. The price ranges from $20/month to $50/month depending on the size of your organization.

In the next few weeks Everyvine will be launching significant updates to the information collected about wines. Improvements will make it easier to specify where wines were grown, produced, and where they can be tasted or purchased. The process of editing a wine will be simplified, and many new characteristics will be available.

In preparation for those updates I have been working on wine competitions. Many people have requested the ability to list awards their wines have won. I thought it was a great idea. Everyvine is organizing the information of wine production: from the planting of a vineyard, to the bottle on the shelf, and everything in between. Wine competitions are an important part of that story. They are an indicator of the quality of grape and wine production. Plus, wine competitions help vineyards and wineries build reputation.

So I embarked on what I thought would be an easy task: obtaining a complete list of wine competitions.

“No one seems to publish a complete and up-to-date list of wine competitions online.”

To my surprise, no one seems to publish a complete and up-to-date list of wine competitions online. I found several good starts (see references below) but the information was truly scattered all over the internet. In the back of my mind I began imagining a new winemaker who has just produced a vintage they are proud of. They want to find wine competitions to enter in to. They would need a list of entry dates, fees, and a sense of past winners. I imagined that new winemaker and thought, “boy, they are out of luck.”

Since the list is unavailable, Everyvine will create and publish it. If I am going to do the work to put this list together everyone should benefit. So here is the result of that work: the new list of wine competitions and an associated page detailing each competition. Here’s an example page, the Winemaker Challenge

Lastly, we need your help. We want the wine competition list to be as complete as possible. If you see a missing competition let us know here so we can add it.

Wine Competition List

References

The following websites were helpful in pulling together information about wine competitions

Keeping track of an industry that’s always changing can be difficult to say the least. Current data on the vineyards, wineries, available winegrapes, and top performing wines, of a wine region is helpful to everyone trying to grow businesses in the wine industry. Unfortunately, that information has always been completely unorganized and unavailable.

This week Everyvine has launched new wine region pages that provide the best snapshot yet of what’s happening in the various wine regions of the United States. The new pages bring together a wealth of information to give you a more complete overview of all the players in a wine region.

Building upon the original pages which included mapping and basic stats, the new pages include lists of top performing vineyards and a break down of vineyard plantings by grape varietal. Plus you’ll find lists of wines using grapes grown in the region and winegrapes, bulk wine, and shiners currently available for sale.

Check the new page for Russian River Valley AVA or browse the wine region list and test out the new pages for your favorite wine region.

Want Everyvine on your Website?

With the launch of the new wine region pages we also wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to wine region associations who are interested in the data Everyvine is publishing. Everyvine has been built from the ground up to be an open platform. We take our users privacy very seriously and will never share protected data. Information, however, that Everyvine members post on public pages is valuable to everyone and we want it to spread.

Everyvine has begun testing data access APIs. Wine regions associations can embed Everyvine data and maps on their websites and in their apps. Everyvine data can provide regional associations valuable tools to manage and inform their membership. If you represent a wine region association and are interested in using Everyvine data on your websites, fill out the data access application to get started.

Since launching Everyvine this last spring, we’ve been hard at work building the most comprehensive community of vineyards ever assembled. Getting more complete viticultural data in one place helps growers market their vineyards, allows us to learn from one another, and benefits the industry as a whole.

The support we’ve received from growers has been phenomenal. Since March, over 1,500 vineyards have been added to Everyvine. The database now contains the locations and management information of over 10,000 planted vineyard areas spread across California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Colorado. All told, the data represents a collection of over 1.5 million data points describing climate, soil, topography and vineyard design.

All the data is fantastic but it isn’t useful until we can search through it quickly. Since I first built Everyvine I have been dreaming of a proper search tool that would allow anyone to find the exact vineyard they are looking for. Today I am very pleased to announce it is here:

Check out the new vineyard search page

The vineyard search page replaces the old list of vineyards which had grown so long it was no longer any fun to use. The search allows you to quickly look up a vineyard by name, of course, but you can also filter vineyards in some amazing ways. Here are some examples to give you an idea of what’s possible:

Example Searches:

Hillside Napa Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards

Vineyards accepting offers on upcoming pinot noir harvests

Feedback is always welcome. Post in comments or email me. Also, if you want to share some interesting searches, feel free to post them in the comments.

Mendocino Ridge is the only non-contiguous AVA in the United States. Unlike all other regions which are a single area, Mendocino Ridge AVA is a collection of ridge-tops on the Mendocino coast. The ridges protrude like islands above the fog which covers most of the coastline. It is a beautiful wine region producing some phenomenal grapes. Prince of Pinot did a great post on the region. Check it out for more info: Prince of Pinot Article

Soil is fundamental to the health and vigor of the vines it supports. Everyvine automatically collects soil information and presents it to visitors because it is an important part of understanding the quality of grapes. We are excited to announce that Everyvine has been able to upgrade the source of our soil data (see reference notes on vineyard pages for more details about data sources).

The level of detail of the new soil data is fantastic. The picture included on this post compares a sample area of the old soil data to the new. Each colored shape represents a soil type. The old data is on top and the map fades into the new data. The new set has more than 20 times the level of detail!
